Deed I Do
Preformed By Ruth Etting
Deed I Do preformed by Ruth Etting and written by Fred Rose is another prime example of jazz in the 1920's. Granted, this dosen't sound much like the the typical jazz melodies produced by musicians such as Louis Armstrong, This song was made to appeal to a different crowd. With its poetic, ballad-like lyrics that tells the story of falling in love and its long verse-refrain structure this is a different type of jazz made to appeal to a different crowd of people.
This simpler, more structured form of jazz music is what brought it to the mainstream and to all public eyes for all to enjoy. Deed I Do draws inspiration from the works of Paul Whiteman, who's concert jazz band grew popular enough to give him the name of "The king of jazz".
Deed I do has such an angelic melody that follows the flow and tone of Ruth Etting's voice. It is fascinating how composers can use certain notes to make us feel like we are falling in love with this man with her. In the time of the great depression, optomistic, upbeat songs like this one rose to fame quite quickly. With its positive message, catchy and relevant tune, and famous preformers its no wonder this song rose to the top of the charts.
Hey Bradley! I LOVE jazz like this, it's just seems super chill and laid back to me and it's so easy to listen to. I feel like that old microphone sound really contributes to that feeling too, I don't know if that's just me. I like that you said certain notes "make us feel like we are falling in love with this man with her." It's so true and I think what makes a good song is when the music can sweep the listening into a completely different world, if you close your eyes and just listen this song really puts you into the time period and the situation and I think that's such a cool thing about music.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your post Bradley! I agree with you that this song is very upbeat, cheerful, happy and gives hope to those who listen to it. Songs like these must have been so helpful and hopeful during the Great Depression with everything that was going on and all that people were struggling with. I, too, really like the simple style of jazz in which this song is performed, and love the soothing tune and message of the song.
ReplyDeleteI dig this song I really like the old sound it gives off. Every time I listen to the beginning it gives me the vibes of some old black and white show in the intro of like leave it to Beaver or something like that haha. But I really do enjoy these old songs and the feeling it gives ya just thinking about sitting in a rocking chair with an old radio in the back round.
